pony and plait

  • Relaxed BBQ

Do you find yourself screaming ‘help, help, help’ Christmas morning rather than ‘ho, ho, ho?’ Between the exchanging of gifts and preparing of your signature ‘bring-along’ holiday dish, you’re not left with much time to prep yourself. For a casual and relaxed Christmas setting, make style easy for yourself with the ‘Easy Twist Ponytail.’ It’s eye-catching and effortless, not to mention one less thing you have to worry about Christmas morning. If a twisted pony isn’t your cup of eggnog, try a relaxed side plait for a natural ‘picnic perfect’ look. Yet another quick and casual do that will keep you fine and on time!

waves bun

  • Beachside Picnic

If you’re spending Christmas by the seaside this year, why not make a ‘wave’ with your hairstyle? Get beach babe hair with a bit of Christmas flair using the CloudNine Hair Wand. If you’re more of an ‘up’ rather than ‘down’ kinda gal, try a messy top knot bun for some summertime fun in the sun, sure to keep you Christmas ‘cool’ this year.

  • Traditional Family Lunch

Another traditional fav is the sleek and stylish low ponytail, a ‘do’ that will never be a ‘don’t!’ For super straight results that shine, use CloudNine’s flat iron, the perfect stocking filler that never disappoints.

  • Crown It All

Organika Interview: Dasha Gold from The Trendspotter

dasha1

Today on the Organika Hair blog we’re featuring one of our favorite Melbourne bloggers – Dasha Gold. Making up one half of The Trendspotter along with her husband Colin, Dasha has become a firm favorite at Organika – due both to her sweet, interesting personality and her AMAZING street style editorials. Dasha and Colin’s blog has been featured all over the world, enjoying popular acclaim throughout the Australian media as leading creatives in the blogging sphere. In today’s blog, Dasha answers questions on both being a blogger and ascertaining ‘trends’, paired with images taken from shoots where Organika Hair has styled her look. We present …. Dasha!

1. We’re sure that becoming a blogging phenomenon isn’t something that happens overnight. How did you discover blogging, and how did your blog gain momentum?

I remember the first time I heard about blogging. I was at a modeling casting for a big contract job, and I was asked if I had a blog. I whispered to a friend, what is a “blog”? She could not explain it to me properly because nobody at that time really knew what it was all about. I have a curious mind and I love to discover the new things, so I opened my first blog a day later. I started following other blogs that inspired me and talking to bloggers with the same interests and passions. I did not have a clear direction, until TheTrendSpotter was created. It evolved with the knowledge and experience we gained.

It combines all things that inspire me – the experience I gained through working in the fashion industry as a graphic designer, a model, an artist and curator. I had a vision that TheTrendSpotter will be more than a blog. It is an online fashion magazine, a source of inspiration for everyone who loves art and fashion. Together with my husband Colin Gold, we envisioned a dream and built it. We wanted to bring together the creative industries, and individuals who share the same passions and love expressing them through their work. Today TheTrendSpotter has an incredible team of the talented writers, photographers and presenters who contribute to it’s diverse content and blog’s creative synergy. The sky is not a limit for us and we are ready to learn more, evolve, discover and take the world by storm.

2. What is the best advice you have for someone looking to start their own blog? Is there any particular kind of blog genre that is as yet uncapitalised upon or untapped?

I have yet to come across a topic that has not been mentioned in a blog. There are so many types of blogs out there, probably almost as many types as there are hobbies. Social media phenomena was a result of more people sharing their interests and passions online, blogging is just another way of sharing. Choose the form of blogging that suits you, have a vision and start it. You don’t have to know what to do, how exactly you will achieve all the goals, you will learn it all in the process of blogging. The more work you put in, the more you crave to discover and evolve, the more knowledge you will obtain. A blog is a way to share, to inspire and to be inspired, it is a reflection of you, it can also be a business if you want it to be. It will be whatever you want it to be if you have a vision and work hard to make it happen.

3. You are known for your eye-catching street style, channeling looks straight from the runway. How do you put an outfit together – do you mix ‘high and low’ fashion? What is your favorite blog post to date?

I am always on a look out for the latest trends and inspirations straight off the runways and streets of the world. When I see something that excites and inspires me, I want to have it. An outfit is a reflection of who I am today, it is a bit like role playing. I can be a strong independent business lady one day or a free spirited hippie the other. I can be elegant and feminine or tough and manly. The looks I create are a reflection of who I am. I love mixing styles, and experimenting with the new looks. To me it is not about the label, it is about how it makes me feel. Blog posts are like capturing the moments, I don’t have a favorite moment as every one of them is special to me, and there are so many more to come.

4. Does hair and makeup play a role in interpreting a trend? Where do you look for inspiration when it comes to beauty?

I look to the runways, street style, fashion editorials, art, other blogs and so much more for beauty inspiration. Hair and makeup is just as important as the outfit when interpreting the trend.

5. You’ve been to Organika Hair several times to finish your look. What can you say about your experience at Organika that sets it apart from other salons?

Organika Hair is more than just a hair salon. It is all about the experience. I always leave it with the biggest smile on my face and I am pretty sure if i could, I would live there. The salon has a beautiful energy that is so easy to fall in love with, the stuff, the interior, the choice of beverage are making me want to come back for more. And on top of it all, my hair is looking beautiful, days and weeks after my appointment. Lovely Lisa gave me some great hair styling tips to the fabulous looking hair every day. Keep up the amazing work ladies, I love you! x

Organika Take New York: Fashion Week Adventures Part 2

seeingdouble

After the great response we had to our first ‘Organika Take New York Fashion Week‘ post, we are pleased to present you with the second half of our amazing NYFW journey!  In this post we share highlights of styling sessions participated in by Lisa and Sarah in addition to a special Australian runway show from lauded local designers Tome. (PS – next time you need to attain symmetry in makeup or design, try closing one eye!)

Editorial styling on the run – Organika meets NYC style. Trends in hair, makeup and fashion are so global that these looks are as familiar to Elwood or Carlton as they are to the Big Apple.

New takes and techniques on classic styles – like this megawatt amplified chignon. An exploded version of Jacki-O style that would certainly suit your upcoming raceday events.

Wetlook beehives with graphic ‘square’ shapes and Bo Derek sex-on-the-beach dirty curls. Summer in Melbourne, here we come.

Organika Hair were pleased to be part of Tome’s Spring 2014 Ready-to-Wear debut at New York Fashion Week. The fledgling two-year old brand from Australian designers Ryan Lobo and Ramon Martin  create collections based around iconic women. Their Spring’14 collection is inspired by muse Cuban performance artist Ana Mendieta telling Broadsheet that “When we pick an inspirational woman for the season, she usually comes to us rather than us seeking her out…. she is articulated in clothing with complete reverence. We do not take these women lightly. We begin with a woman’s life and her output and the collection grows from this.” The runway show was more of a static art installation, rich with ‘earth women’ in evanescent tones of pink, mauve, sand and taupe. Positively reviewed, Style.com said that Tome’s collection was ‘made up of real clothes …. just like the women Lobo and Martin intend to wear them’.

Tome have a bright future ahead of them, nominated as CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Finalists. To see more of their runway collection, click here.

Organika Tutorial: Mermaid Waves with the Cloud Nine Iron

mm2

Today on the Organika Hair blog we’re looking at a new way to ‘mermaid wave’ your hair using the original Cloud Nine iron. This style is simple to achieve once you master the ‘up and down’ waving motion with your Cloud Nine iron. Unlike our previous tutorials, this style isn’t created by ‘curling’ the hair – instead you develop these elegant large waves by carefully sectioning the hair before moving the irons down the length of hair, changing direction as you go.

mm1

Start strong by applying a mix of Caviar Seasilk Oil Gel (for sleekness and to seal the hair’s cuticle) and Bamboo Weightless Whipped Mousse (both of these products are available in-salon at Organika Hair). This glorious-smelling mousse is totally different to the 1980’s foamy, alcohol-based drying products you remember! It creates just the right about of ‘grip’ to your hair, readying it for this wavy mermaid style. Dry hair thoroughly using a Moroccanoil large barelled brush to smooth the cuticle – be careful not to overdry and damage the hair. Overdrying makes it have to add wave or shape to you hair.

mm3

The sleekness of the mermaid wave comes from carefully ‘sectioning’ your hair – divide your hair cleanly into four – just like a hot cross bun! Use large clips.

mm4

Start styling at the back quarter of your hair. Divide the ‘bottom’ square of the ‘hot cross bun’ into four to five horizontal sections. Take the bottom section and begin the ‘waving motion’ using your Cloud Nine iron. Moving slowly from top to bottom, drag the hair up and away from the scalp, neatly turning the iron 180 degrees  to define the ‘wave’. Turn the iron back around 180 degrees to begin the next shaped wave – continuing down the hair. As you reach the end of each piece of hair, curl the last wave under at the tips for a uniform look. Continue in all four sectioned areas, taking particular care to take diagonal sections of hair around the face to try and make the waves ‘mold’ to the natural curves of your face.

mm5

Here is how the ‘mermaid waves’ look before being deftly brushed out. This sculpted style takes considerable brushing to bring into a uniform movement – so grab your trusty paddle-brush and Alterna Caviar Hairspray, and begin slowly brushing  and shaping the waves into place with your hands, spraying as you go.

mm6

Voila! By using the Cloud Nine original iron and quality products, your hair will ‘remember’ this style for days to come – slowly softening and becoming more ‘undone’ and gorgeous. Try it out – post your pictures to the official Organika Hair Facebook page so we can see your handiwork!

Organika Tutorial: Cascade with Cloud 9 Waving Wand

organikahero

In today’s Organika Hair blog we show you how to use Cloud 9’s latest hair tool – the Waving Wand. The Waving Wand shares some similarities with its sibling tool the conical-shaped Wand. The look it creates, however is quite different – the Waving Wand offering rich and deep uniform waves and curls thanks to its unique shape. Here’s Organika Hair’s ‘step-by-step’ tutorial to creating a luxurious and expensive-looking cascade waves. All tools and products used in this tutorial are available at our Carlton and Elwood salons.

IMG_6436

Apply Bamboo 48 Hour Sustainable Volume Spray (enriched with maca root and bamboo) over your hair before blow-drying thoroughly (making sure to tip head upside down while drying to achieve maximum body and volume). This hero product gives your hair the extra ‘oompf’ it needs to last the distance.

IMG_6437

Turn on your Cloud Nine Waving Wand and select your heat setting. Our model has thick hair, so we chose the hottest setting to ensure the deepest ‘memory’ setting to the hair. Cloud Nine Waving Wands come with styling glove to protect your fingers from the intense heat – plus additional benefits including:

  • Korean Rock Mineral-embedded barrel, creating exceptional heat transfer and fast heat styling.
  • This ‘magic mineral’ creates a glide when styling which locks in moisture for infused gloss, finish and longevity.
  • Heat guard and clip stand for safety and resting wand when not in use.
  • Intelligent sleep technology that cools tools to box temperature if they have been turned on, but unused for 30 minutes.

rollhair

Section hair at back of head into six rough parts, wrapping hair around Waving Wand until heated through before pinning in place to cool. Ensure hair is all pinned in the same direction – this uniformity is key to the ‘cascade’ wave style. Once six back sections are completed, divide remaining hair roughly into equal portions and curl, pinning in place to cool completely.

IMG_6443

Once cool, unfurl pinned curls and wonder at the gorgeousness of your hair! Now is the time to be brave and get out your paddle brush – the essential element of the smooth, cascading wave style.

IMG_6445

As Organika Hair stylist Corey shows, hair styled with the Waving Wand can take strong brushing – the intense heat provided means a longer ‘memory’ of shape. Brush, brush,  brush! Brush your hair into the desired parting before smoothing into place with your hands.

IMG_6446

Polish your hair with luminous shine mist – a beautifully fragranced, lightly glistening spray which nourishes the hair while making it glimmer.

Nourish Thyself

nourishbeach3

How easy it is to put ‘you’ on hold. Whether it’s because of responsibilities at work, commitments to your loved family and friends – in the blink of an eye months can pass with little self-reflection or time to feed your spirit. Before you know it – you’re tired out and fed up. Stress and neglect (emotional and physical) show up on the surface of our bodies – lacklustre skin, lank hair, in grumpy little frownlines and in sometimes-snappy responses to those we care for. Today’s Organika Hair blog is a reminder to ‘Nourish Thyself’ – inspired by our Co-Director Sarah Di Iorio who is currently doing just that – resting and replenishing her energy on a far-flung beach in warm climes. Let us inspired you to prioritise your own health and needs.

Yes. Do this. You’ll be surprised to find that what makes you happy could be quite boring to others. It might involve staying home and reading or just ‘being’. Forget the external voices. Do more of what makes you happy.

nourishbeach

Go outside into the winter sunshine and invigorate your cells. Go away to sunnier shores for a week (or a weekend). New light, new sight, new start. Be a nudie rudie by the beach shore! Take care of your beautiful body and hair in the sunlight and saltspray. Make sure to protect your color with Alterna Bamboo Color Care UV+ Fade-Proof Fluide (find the Alterna range at your Organika Hair salon).

And if you can’t get to the sun…. dream about it and dress for it. These ‘mati’ evil eyes are a traditional Greek, Italian and Ottoman adornment – protecting and watching over you. Find your own protection amulet at Samantha Wills or The Dark Horse Jewellery.

nourishbeach1

Be with your girls. Or guys. Talk it through. Nourish thyself. Or at the very least, come in to Organika Hair where you can both talk and be pampered. Do you remember the last time you snorted with laughter catching up with mates?

gogreen

Go green. By drinking a fibre-rich and nutrient packed green smoothie each morning, you’ll be alkalinizing your body. It’s a little like filling the car up with petrol, giving your engine the best chance to run smoothly all day. You’ll notice a change in your emotional health and wellbeing too. We promise.

On the beach or otherwise – style your hair in beautiful, natural, loose styles to reflect your newly found inner zen.
